Water Quality eXchange (WQX), WQXWeb, and the Water Quality Portal (WQP)

Water quality monitoring allows us to better understand and protect water resources. Under the Clean Water Act, state, tribal and federal agencies monitor lakes, streams, rivers and other types of water bodies to determine water quality condition. Additional data is collected by local governments, non-governmental organizations, and volunteers. The data generated from these monitoring activities help water resource managers know where pollution problems exist, where to focus pollution control efforts and where progress has been made.

  • The Water Quality eXchange (WQX) is a national data format and mechanism for sharing water quality data. WQX supports a variety of data types and formats and is used by state and federal agencies, Tribal water programs, local governments, universities and non-governmental organizations to share their monitoring information. There are several options available to prepare and submit data to WQX using different tools and technologies, allowing users to choose a method that best suits their program.

  • WQXWeb is an online application designed to help users reformat their data to the WQX format, document aspects of their monitoring programs, and ultimately submit their data to WQX.

  • The Water Quality Portal (WQP) is a data warehouse where all data submitted to WQX is combined with data collected by the United States Geological Survey and made publicly available for download and retrieval. In all, more than 430 million records have been contributed by more than 1,000 programs, organizations, Tribes, and agencies.
